Why this matters

Being scammed can be stressful and upsetting — financially and emotionally. Once the immediate steps are done, this article helps you steady things, protect yourself going forward, and reduce the chance of being targeted again. Recovery is a process, and you don't have to go through it alone.

Protect yourself from being targeted again

Unfortunately, people who've been scammed are often targeted a second time, sometimes using data from the first scam.

  • Expect follow-up scams, especially "recovery" offers to get your money back for a fee. Never pay these — they are a second scam.

  • Be extra sceptical of unexpected contact for a while, even if it references real details about you.

  • Reduce your exposed data where you can. → See: Protecting Your Personal Data Online Refresh your fraud awareness — knowing the patterns is your strongest protection. → See: How to Recognise a Scam: Red Flags Checklist

Look after your wellbeing

  • Don't blame yourself. Scams are engineered by professionals to deceive; being targeted isn't a personal failing.

  • Talk to someone you trust. Sharing what happened reduces stress and helps you think clearly.

  • Take your time. It's normal to feel shaken — be patient with yourself as you recover.

  • Seek support if the impact feels heavy; you deserve help, and reaching out is a strength.

Turn it into protection

Many people come out of a scam more confident at spotting the next one. A few habits go a long way:

  • Pause on urgency — the constant across every scam.

  • Verify independently before paying or sharing anything.

  • Never share passwords or codes, and never move money to a "safe account."

  • Ask us first whenever you're unsure — the support chat is there for exactly that.
